Radio Telephony Courses

Before they can be issued with a PPL by the Civil Aviation Authority, every pilot is required to obtain a Certificate of Competency in radio telephony. This authorizes the pilot to operate a radio on board an aircraft under Visual Flight Rules. For the PPL a Restricted Certificate is issued. This means the student must demonstrate a basic knowledge of radio procedures and ancillary topics. However, to operate an aircraft radio under Instrument Flight Rules or to gain a CPL, a General Certificate of Competency is required.

The radio telephony courses conducted by Loutzavia in 2008 are detailed below.

English language proficiency

As from 2008 it is an ICAO requirement for every pilot in countries that are signatories to the International Civil Aviation Organisation Charter to be certified as proficient in the English language. This requires them to demonstrate the ability to converse clearly enough with air traffic controllers and other pilots. There are specific levels of proficiency ratings. Loutzavia regularly arranges assessments for students and pilots.
